This year a group of people will be getting together to do what is known as “Turkeys from Heaven”. This organization has been around for more than 15 years feeding local families in need at Christmas time. We are very excited to be bringing this tradtion to Sumter County. On Saturday, December 23rd, we will meet at The Sumter County Chamber of Commerce Office (2031 N C-470, Lake Panasoffkee) to make green bean casseroles, pack rolls, cranberry sauce and desserts, smoke turkeys and deliver Christmas meals. We will have a great time getting a taste of the spirit of Christmas -GIVING TO OTHERS!
If you are interested in helping, either by donating turkeys, dessert, money or your time, we would love it! If you would like to purchase turkeys for this project visit the Winn Dixie in Bushnell or the Winn Dixie in Brownwood/Pinellas Plaza. They will allow you to purchase turkeys and leave them there to be thawed for us so they are ready to cook. We would prefer the smaller turkeys, just enough to feed 1 family. We are going to provide 100 meals this year throughout the county. The names will come from DCF, Heathly Start, Hospice as well as other local agencies, Food Banks, local schools and local churches.
Please contact Jessica Kelly 352-303-9057 or Beth Hunt 352-571-0016 if you are interested in helping. If you are an agency in Sumter County and know names of people who could benefit from the meals please feel free to contact us with that information as well. If you would like to work, we will begin preparing for the deliveries at 8am, Saturday the 23rd and the deliveries will follow. All of our desserts are donated so if you would like to help in this area we will be collecting the desserts on Friday, December 22nd, at The Chamber Office from 8 am- 6pm. If you would like to assist in cooking the turkeys or running a grill contact Susan or Wayne Jones at 352-793-2056. We need to know who is bringing what and when you can help so that we will have everything in order for the 23rd.
This is a great way to really get into the Christmas spirit. We will begin the assembly line at 8 a.m. Saturday morning and keep it going until we are finished!
